There is only one boat operator in Kaikōura, so the choice is not between boats. It is between the water and the air, and between staying in town and coming up from Christchurch for the day. No trip can promise a whale, but the sperm whales live over the Kaikōura Canyon all year, and every mode looks for the same animals.
Time with the whales
The cruise spends a good 2 hours at sea, about 3.5 hours in total, with commentary from the crew along the canyon. The fixed-wing flights last 30 minutes, the helicopter flights 45 minutes or an hour, and the helicopter’s mountain landing comes out of that time. If the goal is simply as long as possible near the whales, the boat wins. The whale watching cruise.
Seasickness and the view from above
The sea off Kaikōura is often rough, and seasickness is the most common complaint in the boat’s reviews. The planes skip the swell entirely and show the whole whale in one frame, which a deck never can. Wings Over Whales takes up to 6 passengers and Air Kaikoura up to 7, both with a guaranteed window seat and a 120 kg limit per person. Air Kaikoura gives no refund if no whale is sighted; Wings Over Whales states no policy on its listing. The flights compared.
The helicopter and the mountain landing
A helicopter can hold position over a surfacing whale and then land on a mountain above the peninsula. South Pacific Helicopters flies an hour with a landing on Mt Fyffe, takes children from age 8 and weighs every passenger; its 45-minute flight also includes a mountain landing. Kaikoura Helicopters flies an hour with an alpine landing in the Seaward Kaikōura Ranges for up to 5 passengers and refunds in full if the flight is cancelled for any reason. The helicopter flights.
Coming from Christchurch without a car
The day tours drive the coast road and build the day around the Whale Watch Kaikoura cruise. Cheeky Kea Tours takes about 10 hours with lunch included, for up to 16 guests, and is not suitable for children under 4. Leisure Tours, booked on Viator, takes about 11 hours with a stop at the fur seal colony, lunch as an option and up to 20 guests; free cancellation ends 6 days before. A day trip leaves no buffer day if the sea cancels the cruise. Whale watching from Christchurch.
Children, season and weather
The boat is the usual family choice, from age 3 if the sea allows. For the fixed-wing flights and two of the helicopter flights, the listings state no minimum age, so check the product page. Sperm whales are there in every month; December to March adds the chance of orcas and the busiest boats, June to August the migrating humpbacks. Swell and low cloud can cancel trips on the morning itself, so book early in your stay and keep a buffer day. Best time for whale watching.
